LA Sign Co | How Important and valuable signage is for your business!

For any business to succeed, the most important thing is that potential customers know that they are there. In one way or another, this is done through advertising. There are several ways to advertise. You can produce a television or radio commercial, take out an ad in the newspaper, put in a listing in the newspaper, encourage existing customers to “tell their friends,” or you can put up a sign. Of all these methods, it turns out that putting up a sign is the most effective.

What exactly is the value of signs for your business? According to a survey conducted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on how people learn about the places where they shop, half indicated that it was the sign that brought them to the door. Word of mouth comes in second with approximately a third of customers learning about a business that way. TV and radio each only had a 1% influence, and signs cost far less. When it comes to effective signs, there are two important takeaways here. You need to get customers in the door, and you need to get them talking

Effective signs do three things. They inform potential clients about you business, direct them to take a closer look at what you have to offer, and contribute to the sales of your businesses products of services. At The Sign Studio, our staff can help you achieve all three of these objectives.

The Sign Studio was first established in 2004 by Chris Ramirez who still owns the business today and personally oversees the production and installation of every sign.

The other part of the equation is working with a regular team that is both trustworthy and very good at what they do. This is exactly what Chris Ramirez has found in his Marketing Specialist, Julie Ramirez and Bill Bates, The Sign Studio’s Art Director.

Julie and Bill work closely with one another and with customers to help assure that they have just the right sign for their business. As Art Director, Bill applies his “awesome” design skills toward the creation of many different types of signs including window and vehicle graphics, menu boards, banners, yard and digital signs, Ready-To-Apply graphics and lettering that customers can apply to signs as they see fit, as well as signs that comply with ADA regulations.

Julie takes Bill’s skill and creativity and brings it home to the client. By using sign making systems and techniques that are state of the art, Julie is able to keep the process of creating high impact signs that are not only cost effective for customers, but also drive in business.
Both Julie and Bill work closely with clients and get to know them well in order to determine the best direction to go as each sign is produced.

Visibility: The sign and the message should be visible from a distance. Additionally, the signs should be unique from the settings within which they have been installed. Light colored letters and a dark background can help enhance visibility of small signs. This helps magnify the sign, hence making it easier for the audience to read.

Readability: It is necessary to make your signs readable—and this can be done by choosing a good design for individual letters. For example, yellow letters on a black background are the simplest color combinations that can be read easily. You need to contact your sign expert to help you choose the right color combinations.

Noticeable: The ease with which your signs can be noticed can influence the decision of an undecided audience. You should draw the attention of your audience by amending the color, shape and size of the sign as frequently as possible.

Legibility: The typestyles that you choose speak a lot to your audience. By selecting the right styles, font size and spacing, you will help your readers distinguish your words by making the ads legible.

Why Your Property Should Comply With New Traffic Regulations

Posted by Julie Ramirez on Mon, Jul 14, 2014 @ 06:07 AM

Why Your Property Should Comply With New Traffic Regulations

Did you know that new U.S. traffic regulations governing the design, size and reflectivity could affect you? The law affects all privately owned property that qualifies as a being open to public travel. Under this category, you will expect shopping centers, condominiums, hotels, restaurants and hospitals among others to be affected by the new regulatory requirements. If your property is found to have violated the new law and that an accident occurs as a result of non-compliance, you could be liable for all the damages.

The amendments on the US code (U.S.C) by the Federal Highway Administration requiring private property to install the right signs has been informed by the fact that property accidents have been on the rise and that fatalities from these accidents have had a serious impact on the lives of the affected persons.

Retroreflective signs that are properly sized and well installed have been found to improve road safety and reduce highway departure crashes. Since the color, and hence retroreflectivity, of the roadway signs fade with time, property owners are now required by law to ensure that their signs are clearly visible, especially during the night.

A recent report by the FHWA reveals that fatalities at night are three times than during the day. The FHWA estimates that there are about 1,200 fatalities annually occurring on property open to public travel and that 20 percent of traffic accidents occur on private property while 21 percent of all accident claims are those that relate to accidents that occur on private property.

What should Private Property Owners do to comply with the new regulations?

Property owners need to conduct a comprehensive inspection to determine if their property complies with the new regulations. Where the color of the signs have faded, do not have the right color, size or design, owners should replace them. Signs with the wrong height or angle should be corrected as well. They should also replace missing, unclear or hidden signs.

The laws shall be applied in their entirety by 2015, meaning that low-grade reflectivity shall still be accepted until then. By complying with the new regulations now, property owners will have spread over the cost of installing the signs. Property owners need to evaluate their signs, identify those that are non-compliant, replace them with compliant signs.

Who can help you comply with the new traffic regulation?

The Sign Studio has experienced staff to help bring all your property signs up to speed with the new traffic regulation. They can inspect your property to ensure that everything is checked, corrected or updated to meet the current standards. Whether your signs have wrong installation height, color or size, the experts will make necessary changes.

After the installation of signs on your private property, they can also help facilitate the inspection by the local authorities for subsequent issuance of citations and certification. Since your property is the largest investment that you may have, you do not want to expose it to irrecoverable risks, and as such, you want to comply fully to ensure you access full limit claims in the event of a loss. If you are all property owners, you will want to minimize your liability as much as possible, and compliance with the new traffic regulation on retroreflectivity is a great way of cushioning yourself from excess liability. If you are not quite sure if your property complies with the regulation, contact, the Sign Studio, a licensed sign company with the knowledge on the new amendments to assess the property and recommend what should be taken, including performing a complete overhaul of the property signs.

A Comprehensive Review on California Restroom & Bathroom Signs

Posted by Julie Ramirez on Mon, Jul 7, 2014 @ 06:07 AM

ADA Restroom Height Installation ImageLA Signs | A Comprehensive Review on California Restroom & Bathroom Signs

Rules governing California Restroom signs have changed dramatically over time—and today, the state of California requires a restroom to have two signs to help identify each restroom that has been declared open to the public. Although some critics have demonized this as unnecessary repetition that fuels confusion, this regulation can only be understood from a historical perspective and the idea behind this grant sign rule.

Prior to ADA, Sam Genensky, a partially blind man saw the need for restrooms in California to be easily identifiable, especially to people with vision challenges. The idea behind the installation of large pictorial shapes with thick edges was to aid people who suffered from vision impairment so that they could easily identify the facility from a distance.

As such, a 12-inch diameter circle was born to identify a women’s restroom while a triangle with similar measurements was used to identify a men’s restroom. A single-user restroom had a triangular shape imposed on a 12-inch circular shape to show that the restroom could be used by either sex. Another salient feature of the sign was that the color used had to contrast sharply with the color of the door on which they were mounted.

At this point, no writings or pictorials were used, which made many designers to question the clarity of the signs, as they were devoid of things that could make them complete. Consequently, designers added men and women pictograms, and in some cases messages. When the accessibility standards were passed, Braille communication became an additional means of communication. Today, everyone considers this effort the first step toward the success of accessibility of restrooms to everyone in the state of California. Blind people were trained on how to identify signs to avoid the inconveniences and embarrassment that went with getting into a wrong restroom.

After this innovation, California became one of the early adopters of accessibility law. By 1990, the ADA was passed, requiring all the restrooms to be identifiable by way of touch. However, the federal authorities that were charged with the responsibility of implementing the rule never used the signs established by the state of California. The reasoning behind this move was to develop a more robust that could integrate Braille in which the sign was to be affixed adjacent to the door as opposed to being placed on the door as in the California case.

The difference between the California accessibility code and the feds was that it eliminated the need for geometric signs, an argument that has been supported by the fact that the California code served the same purpose as the new federal guidelines in respect of communicating visual and tactic formats. The result was a sharp reaction by the disability community, which insisted on the need to have circles and triangles. First, they argued that they had gotten used to them, and secondly, these symbols were unique to California’s history as the state the pioneered the establishment of accessibility. This explains why the signs were retained, which is the reason California has a double signs that identifies restrooms.

Now, with the above comprehensive coverage of the sign law that applies in California and the entire U.S., it is important to ensure that a restroom open to the public complies with the regulation to limit the liability. To stay on the safe side of the law, ensure to contact an experienced sign professional from around your area to help you place the signs as required by the state and federal agencies responsible for certification and licensing of public restrooms and sanitary facilities such as bathrooms and locker rooms.

Los Angeles Sign Company | Using Business Signs Effectively

Los Angeles Sign Company | Using Business Signs Effectively

One of the main goals you have with your business is to increase its visibility and reach out to everyone. A great way to help you accomplish this goal is through the use of business signs. Of course, many people make the mistake of choosing flash over substance. The main thing to remember about your business sign is that it needs to rely upon all the elements working together. This includes the colors, graphics, text, message, and even the size of the sign itself.

Increases Visibility:

One of the most important purposes of your business sign communication is to increase the visibility of your business. In other words, your sign is a way for you to get noticed. It helps to think of this more as business communication or sign communication rather than simply 'a sign.'

This also means that you need to make your signage seem obvious. Place it in such a position that customers and potential customers cannot help but see it. Use the proper size and height. Think about how the various colors and images will contrast and work together with each other. Even the actual colors chosen and their brightness or font sizes might make a difference in how visible and noticeable your sign ends up becoming. For more information, Download our Visability Guide.

Provide Information:

After reading your business sign, the prospective customer should come away with knowledge they didn't have before. This means making it informative, which leads to a higher level of effectiveness. An easy start to this is including all of your business contact information: name, logo, phone number, website, email, and even physical address.

You can also include additional information to enhance the effectiveness of your business sign communication. Make an announcement of a special sale, discount, or offer. Maybe you could even display store policies for refunds, exchanges, or include specific product descriptions.

Using Outdoor Signs Effectively:

An outdoor business sign should be able to help guide people to your location. Even those who might not really be in the market should end up with a clear idea of who you are and what you do. Making the sign legible (the proper size and location) and colorful are some of the keys to an effective outdoor sign.

Proper Use of Indoor Signs:

Once someone is inside your business, your indoor signs should continue offering help and guidance. There should be signs to help identify the various store departments and specific areas can help customers find exactly what they are looking for quickly and easily. These types of signs can also be used to give information about specials and promotions as well as guiding customers to new and popular products and services.

Indoor signs can also include menu boards, digital signs, service lists, and anything else that is a display inside your business. These offer helpful solutions and guidance during the actual time of purchase and can even increase profits by suggesting impulse and additional items at checkout. Of course, you should ensure that your point of purchase displays are organized, visually appealing, and provides information in an organized fashion.

Other Types of Signs:

Signs really come in many different forms. Consider the vehicle wrap or a promotional product to be another type of business signage. They have an amazing ability to get your business noticed and help increase your sales and profits. The same is true of trade show displays, which can help promote you all over the country. To find more about how The Sign Studio can help your business increase its visibility, reach sales and profits, contact us today at (818) 843-9200 or send us an e-mail at Info@SignStudioLA.com.

Say it With a Sign: The History of Signage

The need to advertise a product or service has been around for thousands of years. So long, we can trace the use of signs communicating a good or service back to the cavemen. Basically, advertising through the use of signage has been around as long as the early humans, who first discovered how to communicate things through writing. This early form of advertising is much different than thousands and thousands of years ago, but the principle is the same. The cavemen needed to advertise something for sale (or trade) just as much as business owners need to advertise their services. What’s the common thread? Let’s take a step back in history and explore the use of advertising with signage.

Symbols and Signs

The earliest documented us of signs can be traced all the way back to the Paleolithic Age, around 18,000 BC. This age is characterized as a prehistoric period of human history. Early humans used primitive tools as well as primitive artwork to create and communicate. It’s difficult to know exactly what early humans were trying to communicate from these crude remains of crave paintings, but we do know they were a major form of communication. From illustrations of wildlife, rituals, and portraits, we know they were instrumental in communication between tribes. It only makes sense to believe drawings of animals, food, or goods were used as an advertisement of trade. The cavemen may have drawn symbols on the outside and inside of their caves advertising skills and goods they were willing to trade with other’s in their tribes. Advertising services was born!

1 resized 600

If we move forward in time, we can find solid examples of advertising in the form of a town “crier”. These criers would stand at the gates to a city or in the city square to verbally advertise the goods their master had for sale that day. Though this form of advertising didn’t include signage, this is one of the earliest forms we can find of effective advertising tactics. Later, when merchants began to have a fixed place in town, like a marketplace or trade center, concrete forms of advertising began to pop up. Carvings in brick and stone advertising goods for sale can be traced back to the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. From 3000 BC onward, signs became commonplace, as trade centers of surrounding areas were established. Trade became a booming part of the ancient world, and the marketplaces of many major towns held wealth and power in the ancient world. These symbols evolved into signs to lead the consumer to the appropriate vendor’s stall, increasing trade and competition in advertising.

Artistic Trade

The Dark Ages saw a stall in signs and trade advertising. Since much of the focus in this time was survival, many people did not utilize the ancient trade routes as frequently. When the Roman Empire fell, a major source of trade fell as well. The interconnectedness of the Roman Empire allowed merchants to travel great distances to trade their goods in open-air marketplaces. A period of recovery followed, and trade was born anew. During the Dark Ages, trade was replaced with philanthropy, charity, and support of local community  - less importance was put on travel for trading. The fall of the Roman rule forced trade and many other things to become extremely localized. Due to the decline in large trade centers and basic communication, there are not a lot of written records from the Dark Ages – especially about the state of advertising.

After the Dark Ages, people began to gain more wealth and stability. With a return to large cities and kingdoms, trade and advertising came back with a new look. Trading goods was now about outshining your competitors with more artistic and elaborate signs. Merchants would use bright paint, ornamental iron, and elaborate carvings in an effort to impress and draw in more consumers. In fact, in the 1700’s the first regulations were put on signs in an effort to protect the public from low-hanging, overly ornate signs. Further into history, the 1800’s saw a true boom in advertising and signage. With the birth of printed signs, newspapers, and fliers, advertising became as far-reaching as the modernized forms of trade and selling.

2 resized 600

From what we know, using signs to advertise goods or services has been around as long as we have. From the cavemen to our more modern Victorian counterparts, the need to show people what you had to offer hasn’t gone away. Signs may have evolved from mere cave paintings to vinyl banners and illuminated signs, but the purpose remains the same. If you have a business, you need a great way to advertise; and using a sign is a great place to start!

Los Angeles City Sign Company | How to Get Your Message Out

Posted by Julie Ramirez on Mon, Mar 10, 2014 @ 04:03 AM

Los Angeles City Sign Company | How to Get Your Message Out

In our time, the Internet has become the single greatest marketing and sales tool in the world. Between business web pages, e-commerce websites, and search engines, your ability to grow your business and take it global has never been greater. Yet there is a trap hidden within this great engine of commerce: over-reliance on the web to the exclusion of other, oftentimes more effective, business and marketing tools.

This is especially true for small and medium-sized businesses whose client base is local. When your potential customers are all in the local area, the global reach of web advertising is simply less effective than it would be if you were instead attempting to reach distant markets. Rather, the kind of advertising that businesses have the most success with in local markets is physical, outdoor marketing that integrates itself into the everyday life of local residents.

Not-So-Puny Banner Advertising

The most effective kind of outdoor advertising that you will see is the banner. Banners can end up in a number of locations, and take many different shapes in a variety of locations. For example, a banner can be indoors as well as outdoors; in fact, you will often see indoor banners at malls and other shopping complexes advertising new stores, locations, services, or products. They work just as well indoors as they do outdoors!

1

Another location where you will often see a banner is a tradeshow. Considering how much business can be attracted at a tradeshow, it is important to ensure that your company and its message is broadcasted as widely as possible. Unfortunately, reaching the potential client base in the context of a tradeshow can be difficult, which is where a well-designed, colorful, engaging banner comes in. It is one of the oldest, most surefire ways to get a potential client’s attention and draw them in.

Ch-Ch-Changes

As time-tested as banners are, however, they haven’t gone unchanged with the times. New technologies have allowed banners to become more advanced while still preserving the core of the banner’s strength: getting your message out there, right into the eyeballs of every passerby who might be interested in your product or service. For example, retractable banners allow you to prolong the life of your banner – in inclement weather or late at night when people are unlikely to see the banner, you can preserve your banner by retracting it, thereby protecting it from wear and tear.

Ultimately, the power of a banner is its ability to quickly and efficiently communicate a message in a colorful and often graphic way. In recent years, banners have become increasingly affordable, as printing technologies have advanced and become more affordable themselves. As such, it is often extremely cost-efficient for a business interested in advertising to local markets to invest its marketing strategy into banners and other local advertising techniques.

Radio, television, newspaper, and Internet ads are comparatively quite expensive, and don’t always reach the markets you are targeting. Radio and television relies on individuals tuning in to particular stations or channels at particular times, and having your advertisement broadcast at a high-traffic time can be extremely expensive; if you are trying to control marketing costs, you will likely end up with a radio or television ad that barely anyone hears or sees!

Banners, on the other hand, are seen regularly and by large amounts of people despite their low cost. They can be placed along roads or in heavily trafficked urban or commercial centers, becoming a part of the landscape that works its way into the vision of passersby every day as they move through that space. When someone is seeing your advertisement every day of their lives, it naturally becomes a part of their thinking, and your business will be the one they think of when they need your services. Repetition is often everything when it comes to advertising, after all.

Ultimately, you have to decide what your target audience is for your business, and how much bang you want to get for your buck, so to speak. If you’re looking for cost-efficient, effective, local advertising, then banners are the go-to marketing method that has been proven to work time and again. When you have something to say that consumers just shouldn’t miss, a banner is the perfect place to say it!

Posted by Julie Ramirez on Mon, Feb 24, 2014 @ 06:02 AM

Signs generate huge profits for your business. They are everywhere you look. There are times when signs are very noticeable and times when they seem to fade into the scenery. This usually happens when they are designed by people lacking the skill to make them stand out. Bill, Chris and Julie of The Sign studio have the experience of expert sign designers, making your brand a stand out priority. Your sign that gets little attention can become a constant reminder to the public of your product. When the need for a product arises, there is a name that relates close to an advertising sign, generating huge profits for business.

Signs shout or quietly state the case of business. They are used as reminders, announcers or marketers of a million products. Many businesses do not get the most from a sign, leaving it with poor coloring and outdated graphic designs. Julie, Bill and Chris have the experience to help you get the most out of your sign advertising. Use this media to inform the public about your business.
